Understanding 'te' forms would become a lot easier if you have prior knowledge of verb groups.

Learning 'te' forms of the verb should be the next step after learning about verb groups. If you know 'te' forms, you will be able to understand a lot of grammar patterns.

Let's see how to make 'te' form and where can you use it

Group 3

Let's start with group 3. This group has only 2 verbs and these are called irregular verbs. Like I mentioned before too, it is better to just learn them instead of trying to find a logic. But please, suit your needs.

As you can see here, くる would become きて and する become して.

Do you remember how to make the ~masu forms of the verbs?

What will be the ~masu form of くる?

It's きます.

For する, it's します.

Group 2

I love this group! It's so simple. Just remove る at the end and add て.

For example: たべる → remove る→ add て → たべて

Group 1

Group 1 needs little attention. I am going to explain you the process step by step.

Understand that knowing dictionary form of the verbs in important.

If you know the dictionary forms, you just have to look at the last sound of the verb.

Next, we will divide the verbs in 5 sub-groups.

Now that we have understood the sub groups, let's learn using some examples;

As soon as you look at the verb, decide what sub group it is.

🌸かく (to write)→remove く add いて→かいて

🌸いく (to go)

Here we can see that since it ends in く it is sub group 3, but, THIS VERB IS AN EXCEPTION.

Even though it belongs to Subgroup 3, it conjugates, not as いいて but いって. ⬅

🌸もつ (to have/to hold) → remove つ add って→ もって (sub group 1)

🌸あそぶ (to play/hang out)→ remove ぶ add んで → あそんで (sub group 2)

🌸およぐ(to swim) → remove ぐ add いで→ およいで (sub group 4)

🌸はなす (to speak/talk) → remove す add して→ はなして (sub group 5; incorrectly written as sub group 4 in the picture above)

And that's all!

I will be uploading some free study material for 'te' form of the verbs soon!

Let's see where you can use these forms!

Well, a number of grammar patterns use 'te' form of the verb, but, the most common one is ~てください.

~てください simply means, PLEASE DO (the action)

For example, If I want to say ,

🍙 Please eat- たべてください。(in Japanese, please will come later and the action first)

🍸 Please drink - のんでください (のむ will change to のんで)

👀 Please see- みてください (みる will change to みて)

📚 Please study - べんきょうしてください (べんきょうする will change to べんきょうして)

Now, casually (you must have heard this a lot in Anime and other Japanese programs), you can just remove

ください.

So if I say, みて! that would mean, Hey look!

おしえて! would mean, teach me!

and so on...

Of course there are other grammar patterns where we can use 'te' form. But, for now, please try to practice with this pattern.

More soon!

Till next time!

Love

Indu
