Now, first of all, why did I chose to write a blog on this topic ? Lately, I have noticed a lot of students giving their introductions in Japanese but they just seem to either forget or plainly don't know how to tell their hobbies in Japanese. If you ask me, this is very basic and also quite an important sentence to add in your introduction.
So let's jump right into it !
Hobby is しゅみ・趣味 (Shumi/ शुमि ) in Japanese.
The basic sentence (using only nouns) that you can use to talk about your hobby is
しゅみ は ＿＿ です。
趣味は＿＿です
Shumi wa ___ desu.
शुमि वा ___ देस
は is marking the topic of the sentence here that is しゅみ。
To be more specific and to assert that you actually are talking about yourself you can say :
わたし の しゅみ は ＿＿＿ です。
私の趣味は ＿＿ です。
Watashi no shumi wa ____ desu.
वाताक्षी नो शुमि वा ____ देस
Here, わたし の meaning mine/मेरा /मेरी since の particle is the possession particle.
Therefore this entire sentence translates as :
My hobby is ___
मेरी hobby ___ है
Let's see some vocabulary that you can use in such sentences :
おんがく (Ongaku)- Music
つり（tsuri) - Fishing
スポーツ (Supo-tsu)- Sports
ダンス (Dansu)- Dance
空手 (Karate)- Karate
ハイキング (Haikingu)- Hiking
コスプレ (Cosupure)- Cosplay
Now that you have learned some vocabulary, you can easily make a sentence using the above template:
しゅみ は つり です。
Shumi wa tsuri desu.
My hobby is fishing.
Or you can say わたし の しゅみ は コスプレ です。
Watashi no shumi wa cosupure desu.
My hobby is cosplay.
So easy right?
But, as you must have noticed that there are only a few nouns that you can put in such sentences . And therefore, we can also talk about hobbies using a verb.
The first thing that you need to remember is that you can only use verb in DICTIONARY FORM here. The second thing that you have to remember is to put こと (koto) after the verb.
Let's look at an example to understand better.
しゅみ は えいが を みる こと です。
Shumi wa eiga wo miru koto desu.
शुमि वा एइगा वो मिरु कोतो देस
My hobby is watching movies.
Another example;
しゅみ は ほん を よむ こと です。
Shumi wa hon wo yomu koto desu.
My hobby is reading.
Please do not forget to add こと in these sentences. The meaning of こと is actually a little hard to explain. It can be roughly translated as 'event' or some matter. Simply when you add こと with the verb in these sentences it becomes ’verb-ing'. That is watching, studying, reading etc.
(हिन्दी में こと का मतलब 'ऐसी बात' या फिर 'ऐसा काम' हो सकता है । )
We can also write the entire sentence as
わたし の しゅみ は え を かく こと です。
Watashi no shumi wa e wo kaku koto desu.
My hobby is drawing pictures.
That's it !
Now, let's learn how to ask about someone's hobby in Japanese.
しゅみ は なん です か？
Shumi wa nan desu ka?
शुमि वा नान देस का ?
Shumi is ofcourse hobby here
は particle is marking the subject that is しゅみ
なん・なに means What
and ですか at the end means its a question
So whenever someone asks you しゅみは何ですか？ Please use the either two ways to answer.
If you need to be more specific as to whom this question is directed, you can say just add their name and の particle.
Eg:
ゆきさん の しゅみ は なん ですか？
Yuki san no shumi wa nan desu ka?
What is your hobby yuki?
